The Projector, Infantry, Anti-Tank (PIAT) was a British portable anti-tank weapon developed in 1942. The PIAT was based on the spigot mortar system (employing a rod or spigot onto which a hollow tube on the projectile fits, the opposite of a bazooka or a standard mortar). The PIAT had the advantages of an inexpensive mechanism and a lack of muzzle smoke to reveal the position of the user. This image shows a PIAT team from 9th Royal Fusiliers in action (September 10, 1943).
